The sea is at its warmest of the year in early October, the light turns gold, the restaurants have tables again, and the locals get their villages back and are happier to share them. If you can travel outside school holidays, these are the months we'd choose ourselves.

The honest weather report

October typically runs somewhere around 21 to 25 degrees by day, with the sea still very swimmable after its summer of warming; a good October beach day is indistinguishable from July, minus the queue for lunch. November is usually somewhere in the high teens, still shirtsleeves in the sun, cooler in the evenings, and made for walking rather than swimming. And the honesty: these months bring the year's first proper rain, usually in bursts between fine spells rather than washed-out weeks. Build one flexible day into each week and the weather will rarely beat you.

What's open, and what the quiet feels like

Lagos runs year-round: restaurants, cafes, the market, the old town, all of it, just calmer. Luz keeps most of its restaurants open through October, and a handful take their own holidays as winter arrives, so a November evening means choosing from many rather than everything. Golf: this is the season

Autumn is what Algarve golf courses spend all summer preparing for: the courses at their best, the heat off the fairways, and tee times bookable again. Most of the things-to-do list works better in these months than in high summer; only the waterparks close.

Eat like it's autumn

This is chestnut country in November: the 11th is São Martinho, when all of Portugal roasts chestnuts and toasts the year's new wine, and the smell of roasting stands drifts through Lagos for weeks either side. The fish market doesn't know it's low season, the piri-piri chicken is the same price it always was, and the restaurants that stay open are the ones cooking for locals, which tells you where to book.

Autumn stays cost meaningfully less than summer, arrival days go flexible, shorter stays become possible, and a heated pool turns October swimming from brave to lovely. For golf groups, walking parties, big birthday gatherings and anyone whose diary allows it, autumn is quietly the best value the Algarve offers.
