There are wild dolphins off this coast all year round, and watching a pod surf the bow wave of your boat is one of those moments that makes the whole holiday. It's also a wildlife trip, not a theme park, which means the honest guide has to say things the brochures don't. Here's how to do it well.

What you'll actually see

Common dolphins are the regulars, often in energetic pods that come to play in the boat's wake; bottlenose dolphins turn up frequently too, bigger and more sedate. Lucky trips have seen much rarer visitors over the years, but book for dolphins and let anything else be a bonus. Most trips find them, and operators are genuinely good at it, with spotters and shared radio between boats. Nobody serious will promise you a sighting, and you should be wary of anyone who does; the good operators offer a free second trip if the sea stays empty, so check that policy when you book.

The boats, and which to choose

From Lagos marina, the standard trip is around 90 minutes on a RIB, a fast rigid inflatable, typically €30 to €45 per person. RIBs are the right tool: quick enough to reach the pods and low enough to put you at eye level with them. The honest trade-off is the ride, which bounces; brilliant for most, unkind to bad backs, pregnancy and very small children, and operators set age minimums for that reason, so check before booking with little ones. Catamaran and larger-boat trips are gentler and slower, better for mixed-age groups, with less of the eye-level magic. When to go

Dolphins are here all year, but trips run most reliably from spring to autumn, and mornings are best: calmer seas, better light, and the day's first trips tend to have the freshest information on where the pods are working. If your week has one flat-calm morning in the forecast, spend it on this.

Doing it right by the dolphins

The rules that matter: boats should let the dolphins choose the encounter, approaching slowly and side-on, never chasing, splitting or boxing in a pod, and never putting swimmers in the water with them. The Lagos operators are, on the whole, respectful, and the dolphins' relaxed behaviour around the boats is the evidence. If a skipper anywhere behaves otherwise, say so in the review; it's the mechanism that keeps this industry honest.

Dolphins plus Benagil?

Combination trips exist that pair dolphins with the Benagil cave in one longer outing. They're decent value, with one honest caveat: wildlife doesn't do schedules, so the combined trips give the dolphins less searching time than a dedicated trip does. If seeing dolphins is the point, book the dolphin trip; if ticking both boxes in one morning matters more, the combo is fair.
